Advisories
INTEL-SA-00270
Linux reports it in
tsx_async_abort

Intel’s Transactional Synchronization Extensions (TSX) run a block of code as a transaction that the processor rolls back if it aborts, for example when another thread touches a cache line the transaction uses. Right after such an asynchronous abort, loads in the transaction can receive data from the same internal buffers as in MDS. It affects processors that support TSX and do not report TAA_NO, including ones that report MDS_NO.

Turning TSX off removes it. Linux 7.3 turns TSX off by default on processors whose microcode provides the TSX control register.

Affected processors

7 of the 27 microarchitectures listed are affected in all or some of their models.

What the sources say of each microarchitecture. Intel’s list gives each CPUID family, model and stepping it covers, with Intel’s mitigation for it (Software, MCU for a microcode update, or Hardware).

Mitigations

  • Kernel: The MDS buffer clearing with VERW also covers TAA; Linux uses it where TSX stays on. Instructions: VERW. Source.
  • Microcode: Microcode adds IA32_TSX_CTRL (MSR 122H), which turns TSX off, so that transactions always abort at once (XBEGIN goes straight to its fallback) and the CPUID bits of TSX clear; the boot option tsx= chooses. Instructions: XBEGIN, WRMSR. Source.

How to check a machine

On Linux, /sys/devices/system/cpu/vulnerabilities/tsx_async_abort holds one of these lines:

  • Not affected
  • Vulnerable
  • Vulnerable: Clear CPU buffers attempted, no microcode
  • Mitigation: Clear CPU buffers
  • Mitigation: TSX disabled

On an affected processor the line ends with the SMT state. Source.
